Phelps Mountain

Named for Orson "Old Mountain" Phelps, a famous 19th century Adirondack guide, Phelps Mountain lived up to its reputation as being the easiest of the high peaks reached via Marcy Dam. The trail ascends 1982 feet in 4.4 miles. Jay and Jim climbed it in a leisurely three hours on Aug. 11, 2001. The return trip took 20 minutes less.

Phelps, at 4,161-feet is the 32nd highest peak in the Adirondacks. It provides spectacular views of Marcy, Algonquin and Wright Peak as well as Avalanche Pass.
