Cascade & Porter Mountains

The weather forecast when we planned our ascents of Cascade and Porter Mountains was for morning rain with clearing in the afternoon. By the time we hit the road flash flood warnings had been posted and the sun didn't emerge for three days.

Cascade at 4,098 feet is listed as the 36th of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. The ascent is 1,940 feet along a 2.4 mile trail. The peak was in the clouds. The only view was of a small, red salamander that guarded the summit.

Porter was listed as being a .7 mile hike from a junction below the summit of Cascade. The sign said it was just 290 feet to the peak. What it didn't say was there is a steep, rocky and, at least on June 23, 2001, water filled col that leads down several hundred feet before starting back up. Mike slipped off a log bridge into knee deep ooze and his friend Matt Andrews developed a mild case of hypothermia.
