Big Slide is a curious mountain. The "Big Slide" was created in the 1800's when two massive slides sent a major part of the mountain into the valley below. Today several large fissures near the top of the 4,240 foot peak promise that more slides are in the mountain's future.
We climbed Big Slide July 25, 2002. We chose a spectacular route that starts at the Garden parking lot and goes over three smaller mountains known as the Brothers. A short but steep climb to the top of the first brother rewards the hiker with nearly continuous, but everchanging views from open ledges of the entire Great Range and a host of other peaks.
The ascent of Big Slide itself is steep but was made easy by two rough-hewn wooden ladders on the steepest pitch. One of the ladders was only days old on the day we climbed Big Slide.
We descended via Slide Brook Trail, a route that was two miles longer than the ascent but afforded us an opportunity to explore new territories.
