Azure Mountain

Located in southern Franklin County about nine miles south of St. Regis Falls, Azure Mountain, at 2,518 feet, is far from being a high peak. But the short, steep hike is worth the effort.

We climbed Azure Nov.23, 2001, an unusually warm, clear and windy day. The trail to the top is just a mile long and while steep, the trail was excellent.

Azure is one of seven Adirondack peaks with historic fire towers that were added to the National Register of Historic Places in September 2001. A 35-foot-tall tower was erected in 1918 and closed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation in 1978. Recently a group of local residents formed Azure Mountain Friends whose goal is to restore the tower so it can be opened to the public.

The mountain affords a spectacular view of the northern Adirondacks and nearby rivers. It also sports a giant glacial erratic that appears in danger of plunging off the side of the mountain at the slightest touch.
